Conclusion
The romanticization of piracy as well as the allure is fueled not by history, but by the media. The nations of the Caribbean have seen profit and tourism opportunities from helping weave this narrative of violence and thievery to one of adventure, treasure, and mysticism. While piracy does still exist today, many would consider modern piracy to not be as admirable as the ones we see in the media represented in the Caribbean.
While it is important to realize that piracy is based on history, it has largely been shaped by what we consume. The Caribbean has learned of this and exploited this, creating connotations of piracy to the Caribbean. Piracy did not start in the Caribbean, yet many of us think of it first when thinking of piracy. The Caribbean has capitalized on this tremendously, and while not a bad thing, the region has created the history that they wanted to create- one of adventure, treasure, parrots on shoulders, and rum.. lots of rum.
There is a lot more I could have covered with piracy, the topic is truly deep in importance in many regions, but especially the Caribbean.
