Introduction
Ahoy, there Maties!
The title of my Virtual Exhibit is: The Romanticization of Piracy in the Caribbean.
Let's start with a question: What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word, "Piracy"?
Do you think of adventure?
Do you think of treasure chests filled to the brim with gold?
Do you think of a large red X on a map that marks the aforementioned treasure?
Do you think of big wooden ships with sails that bear skulls?
Do you think of men on ships that wreak of rum and are singing sea shanties?
Do you think of beaches with sand- it's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.
Now let me ask another question: Where do you imagine piracy? Most often, many will answer the Caribbean- however keep in mind that piracy is a global occurrence.
With my research exhibit, I will explain the significance of piracy in the Caribbean. This significance will include the media's portrayal of piracy in media, pirate-related tourism, as well as the historical importance. I also hope to better explain the narrative that has been created regarding piracy.
